There can be a number of factors that lead to get a mole removal done. Two of the most typical ones being the cosmetic reason and the medical reason. Whatever may be the reason, it is essential to know all the details about the procedures of removal. One should also get the mole checked before removing it. The reason behind this being that some moles may turn malignant, causing a type of cancer known as melanoma. When normal moles are continuously exposed to ultraviolet rays they tend to become cancerous.
An abnormality can be detected to the earliest if a consistent check is kept on the moles. The first abnormality that can be seen for is asymmetry. The moles which are not malignant are often symmetric. Thus if one observes any kind of asymmetry in their moles then there is a possibility of the mole being cancerous. Also moles that are not normal, usually have irregular borders as opposed to the normal ones.
Normal moles are usually black or brown in color. In the event the mole is seen to have mixed colors like tan, red, etc then it is not regarded to be normal. In cases when the mole starts growing larger in size it needs to be examined. Looking out for the appearance of any kind of lumps on the surface of the mole is also necessary as it is also a sign of abnormality.
Surgical procedures are often preferred for mole treatment because of medical reasons. On discovering the presence of any type of abnormality stated above, a doctor should be consulted. On examining the mole and based on the various factors like the size of the mole and the place where it is located, the doctor would suggest the best way in which the mole can be removed.
The surgical procedure consists of a lot of methods. The first method would involve the excision of the mole. A scalpel is used to do it. Thorough cleaning of the area where the mole is present prior to its removal is necessary. Local anesthesia may or may not be needed, depending on the size of the mole. Stitches are applied to the area after the removal of the mole. The stitches are usually dissolved and there is no need to get them removed.
Cauterization is another commonly used method. In this the mole is burned off with the help of a cautery tool. This method is more beneficial as compared to the previous one as it has no requirement of stitches. One of the other most popular methods included in this category is the removal of a mole by laser treatment. Having said that, this method cannot be used to remove moles that are large in size. This is because the laser beam used to remove the moles is not able to penetrate very deep into the skin.
The major drawback associated with the surgical treatment is that it is very expensive. Having said that, it is mandatory to go for this option if the removal of the mole is due to medical reasons.
