The Side Effects of Teeth Whitening

When it comes to teeth whitening, you have two options. There are tooth whitening products you can buy from stores or you can go to a cosmetic dentist and ask for an effective treatment. However, you need to know something before you push through with it. There are side effects that go with that white smile you have always longed for. Indeed, the treatments are normally painless and are undoubtedly safe. However, you still need to consider the possible side effects before you push through.

Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common side effects of this particular cosmetic dental procedure. You may actually start feeling it even while the teeth whitening process is happening. There are whitening treatments where the teeth enamel has to be scraped off, and when this happens, the inner layer of the teeth becomes exposed. This exposure of the dentin layer causes the sensitivity. Therefore, you should really ask your dentist if there are optional treatments you can try, especially if you have always suffered from occasional tooth sensitivity.

Some whitening treatments may also cause soft tissue irritation. In layman's terms, this is also known as chemical burn. This occurs when the solution used for teeth whitening rubs off on the gums during the process. If, unluckily, you experience chemical burn during treatment, you'll see your gums turning white and may stay that way for quite some time. Don't worry about it, since it's the usual side effect of your gums becoming exposed to the whitening solution called hydrogen peroxide. But you must watch out for prolonged exposure to these solutions, since it may cause inflammation, redness, and even bleeding.

Finally, you may become disillusioned when you see undesirable results. However, you should keep in mind that sometimes, the result of the teeth whitening treatment is reliant upon the present color and condition of your teeth. Therefore, if the stains on your teeth are strong or these are badly discolored, you should anticipate results that are below your expectations. Now that you know what the side effects are, think a couple of times before you make a decision, and always consult your dentist for advice and suggestions.
